Field guide / Keep the work legible

What belongs in an electrical wiring quote?

Compare rooms, equipment, retained circuits, investigation, access, permits and restoration on the same basis.

A quote scope matrix aligns rooms, equipment, access, approvals and records before totals are compared.

The useful starting point

Compare rooms, equipment, retained circuits, investigation, access, permits and restoration on the same basis.

01

Start with a current room and equipment brief

Give each contractor the same layout, equipment schedule, intended use and renovation stage. Mark undecided items. A quote prepared before the kitchen appliance choice may describe a different installation from one prepared afterward.

The room brief records owner requirements without prescribing circuits. Ask the contractor to explain the proposed design and its assumptions. Keep technical responsibility with the qualified professional.

02

Describe work boundaries clearly

The quote should identify new and retained work, affected rooms, equipment connections, control components and investigation. Ask whether existing circuits are assessed only where altered or as part of a broader review. A renovation quote is not automatically a whole-property inspection.

Separate fixture supply from installation, optional automation from required functions and future provisions from completed circuits. A vague allowance for electrical does not make these outcomes comparable.

03

Assign access and surface work

Identify who opens and restores walls, ceilings, floors and exterior finishes. Ask how shared access with other trades is coordinated. Where assemblies need specific treatment, assign that responsibility rather than leave it between contracts.

Define concealed-work assumptions and the variation process. The contractor should record findings and obtain the appropriate authorisation for additional scope. Avoid treating every discovery as included when no investigation was priced.

04

Name permits and completion records

Ask who holds the electrical permit, arranges inspections and supplies the outcome. The Safety Codes Council explains contractor permit responsibility. Confirm the appropriate local process for the actual address.

Include accurate identification, product instructions and the agreed route record. Specify what information is delivered for concealed work. An invoice alone should not be the only evidence the owner receives.

05

Compare assumptions beside prices

Review schedule, payment stages, warranty terms, equipment substitutions and exclusions alongside totals. This guide invents no market price range. A clear actual proposal provides a more defensible budget than a generic online average.

Read the handover guide before authorising work. A HAUSE request does not verify contractor credentials, availability or design approval; complete the appropriate contracting checks with the actual provider.

Questions / Direct answers

Common questions

Does an electrical quote include drywall repair?

Only if the agreed scope says so. Assign access and restoration explicitly.

Are fixtures normally included?

Ask the contractor to identify supply, installation and compatibility responsibilities; do not assume.

Does a renovation quote inspect the entire house?

Not automatically. The assessment boundary and retained-work limitations should be written.

Confirm the actual location, permit authority and equipment instructions before relying on a requirement. A source from another jurisdiction is identified for context.

Do not open equipment, handle refrigerants or work on energized systems. Permits, qualified trades and inspection requirements vary by location. This guide does not design an installation or certify existing equipment.
